Lemon Semifreddo with Plum Compote & Fresh Strawberries

Narrow, cramped and void of any real counter space, my "so-called" kitchen is one single-purpose appliance away from imploding. And though the Hello Kitty waffle press is absolutely out of the question, the thing that I've really been jonesing for is an ice cream maker! Oh yes! What's Summer without homemade ice cream? In the mean time, while I pine away and contemplate swapping out my beloved dehydrator, I'll be making lots of semifreddos (frozen custards/mousses).

I made this semifreddo recipe and it rocked my world. Creamy beyond words with the right amount of lemony tang. Even after I get my ice cream maker, I'm still gonna go back to this recipe. That's how good it is! I topped it with a warm plum compote and fresh strawberries. Fruit plus dessert equals healthy dessert in my book. :) If the seven egg yolks and nearly two cups of cream scare you, let me tell you, the fat is totally essential in the texture of the final product. So for the love of food, please no skimping. Don't want to anger the dessert Gods now do we?

I’ve been so curious about Semifreddo.  Jamie Oliver has a recipe in The Naked Chef.  I think I’d read about it one other place but before that had never heard of it before!  I’m definitely going to try it the next time we have a little warm weather. (It’s been a little chilly here on the North Coast lately).

Get the ice cream maker!  Well worth the investment and then once you have it I’ll share my favorite frozen dessert recipe which is for blackberry rose geranium sherbet.

7 egg yolks?  2 cups o’ cream?  It has to be a desert to be that unhealthy.  I prefer the ice cream route.  I got one of those ice cream ball things that you put your ingredients in and fill the ball with ice and salt.  Works pretty good and you get a great workout playnig with the ball.

Semifreddo has a great allure to me. It is sort of quirky really: for our wedding someone bought us an ice cream maker we never received. but that has somehow put in my head a longing for all things frozen dessert.

And yet I’ve never made semifreddo. hmmm.

My dehydrator died on me during my last batch of dehydrating kiwi’s. Hope you get an ice cream maker soon.
in the mean time, you certainly make some beautiful stuff with out one! The compote and all the berries is perfect for summer!
