Taking Advantage of the Farmers’ Market Salad

It's no wonder that the Santa Monica Farmer's Market has its very own cook book. This place is loaded with an incredible variety of fruit and vegetables year round. My friend visiting from Kansas was amazed. He said, "if we had a farmers' market this time of year, you could get potatoes, maybe." This made me laugh and realize just how good we have it out here in sunny California. Lucky, lucky ducky. Here's my SM Farmers' Market tribute salad. A base of crisp Little Gem lettuce, topped with a sprinkling of crunchy pea sprouts and slivers of sweet roasted Chioggia beets. The icing on cake is the scattering of tangy arugula flowers, my newest FM find. They have the same lively bite as their leafy counterparts, all wrapped up in a cute little package. A very complex simple salad if you ask me. Instead of dressing this salad, I served it with cruets filled with olive oil and vinegar. Add as needed. Produce this farm fresh needs very little. Visit your local farmers' market.

[this is good] Wow, your photo just gets more and more fabulous every time!  Of course the food is already irresistible.  I’m afraid this salad is a little too beautiful to be eaten.  I’d rather hang it on the door for Christmas.  I’m sure that would be the most creative and eye-catching decoration ever!

I go to the one on Saturday mornings, but there’s also one on Wednesday that’s suppose to be the “restaurant” farmers’ market. Definitely check it out and let me know how it goes.

Do you have any tips to help one find their local farmers markets? I live in Arizona and never hear of anyone talking about anything like this…

[this is good] Nay, this is gorgeous!

Our local farmer’s market is not as well endowed; still, you have inspired me into paying them a visit soon.

Yep . . . you are a lucky ducky in SoCal.  I was in San Francisco for a too-brief visit yesterday and spent the morning at the UN farmers market and the afternoon enjoying free cooking instruction from a real chef in his home kitchen . . . and I was so happy to be at a market with more than root vegetables . . . which is pretty much all that’s been available at my DC market for the past too-many-to-count visits!  This salad’s beautiful.  I’ve never had arugula flowers, but I’m definitely gonna keep an eye out for them here when things thaw out a bit and the market livens up.  Cheers!

Not sure what part of AZ you’re in, but I found this link that might be helpful:
