On Blogging & Fear of the Limelight

I'm giving a presentation at work tomorrow. It is an exercise on public speaking, which I'm terrible at by the way.  One on one or small groups don't intimidate me, but somehow putting me behind a podium with bright lights and a 15 pound adding camera makes me feel like I'm in an interrogation room. Suddenly I'm an idiot on stage. The other day, I watched myself on camera (another exercise in public speaking) and it was utterly terrible. Definitely cringe-worthy. I was smiling so wide that you could see my molars. And my bangs kept falling in my eyes. BIG sigh!

Well, tomorrow I get to give a five minute presentation on a topic of my choice. They asked us to choose something we were passionate about, so that our natural personalities and enthusiasm would shine through. Of course, we're suppose to be "experts" on the topic. At first, I was going to present on my favorite kitchen tool, my tamis, but then I thought jamming might be a more interesting topic for my audience. Then I thought I should talk about fund raising. The more and more I thought about it, the more and more I toggled between the ideas. Last night, I had my presentation epiphany… why don't I give a presentation on food blogging? I love blogging and I LOVE food. It would be perfect, though I would still have to tackle the presenting part of it. What do you guys think? I'm still in the brainstorming phase of it all so I'd love to hear what you guys think. What is your favorite part of blogging? Why do you blog? What would you present on?

Sorry for the non-food post and for listening to me rant. Here's a pic to tide you over until our next meal together:

Interesting!! I think giving a presentation on food blogging would be great! My favourite part of blogging isn’t so much writing about myself, but mostly learning from other people through comments and reading their blogs. Blogging is a fundamentally social activity for me, and I’m sure that some out there would agree as well. I don’t blog to send things into the void (even though some things end up there). I blog as sort of a conversation with other people. “Here’s what I’m doing with my life. How about you?”

I think if I had to do a presentation, I would probably choose film photography as my topic. A lot of people think it’s a dying art, but I’m trying like hell to revive it.

I agree, Reesie. My favorite part about blogging is learning about other people… what they’re eating, how they’re feeling, what they want to do, etc. It’s also interesting how much you learn about yourself in the process.

    Power to film photography! :)

Ha, so I’m not the only one who cares about what people are eating? I honestly wish I could do a study that would tell me what people eat everyday, how it’s prepared, and how they feel about their food. I would find that incredibly interesting. I would also want to know about ALL the food they consume, not the nicely photographed kind. Ha…

I also want to come over to your house and take pictures of all your food…

[this is good] I work with several professional photographers, they all compliment! Seriously, the photography is just as envious and amazing as your culinary skill!

[this is good] Thats a wonderful idea. I would definitely do a presentation on food blogging. The thing that fascinates me about food blogging is that its like a Venn diagram; most people differently from you, yet there are some areas of overlap. And its so wonderful to discover these overlaps, to find out their version of your truth.

Good Luck! People love food and people love blogs, so this one is a sure hit.

I blog because I have something wanna share, something must be unbound. Life is on your way, deponds on how you look at it. It could be as exciting as a roller coaster, or as spooky as a graveyard. Once you find your enthuastism, just do it, don’t think too deep and never give up.  “jia加 you油” = go for it in Chinese.

    Julie, thanks for the add.

I really suck at making public speeches too.  But talking about something you are really passionate about helps a lot.  Your food and photography are both excellent and professional looking.  You must really love food blogging.  It will be so much fun to share your thoughts and joy in life by talking about foodblogging.  I do it because I want to learn about other people too.  After all, there are not so many vegans out there.  Sharing and feeling a sense of belonging is definitely a big reason why I blog.  Sorry I can’t help more.  Good luck on your presentation!
