Cocktail crafting is all about hitting a balance of flavors. Much like cooking, this can take some experimentation and practice–lots of it! So, let’s get started with this Mulberry Rye Smash. I used a basic ratio (2 parts alcohol, 1 part sweet, and one part sour) that I learned from a cocktail-making workshop at Poketo and added some beautiful mulberries from Pudwill Farms.
If you like mojitos, you’ll love the whiskey smash. It’s got the similar minty-freshness that reminds you of summer and beach vacations. Just swap out the rum for rye whiskey.
I’m always on the hunt for interesting food to work with and these Persian mulberries (top-right) caught my eye. They are super sweet with a little tartness and add the perfect balance to the cocktails.
Here’s to happy hour at home. Cheers!
4 mulberries + more for garnish
2 sprigs of mint + more for garnish
1 ounce simple syrup
1/2 lemon
2 ounces rye whiskey (I used Sazerac)
ice
With a wood spoon or muddler, muddle the mint, mulberries, lemon, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add the ice and rye; shake. Strain into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with mint and a few whole mulberries.
